DAL TADKA - SOUTH INDIAN STYLE
Dal Tadka is the most simple sambar variety that can be made in very less time. Its nothing but the tempering/tadka added to the cooked dal. This is a easy and comfort menu during our busy days. This can be served as side dish for rice, jeera rice, plain pulao or roti. Its a staple and healthy food for the vegetarians. Basically this is a Punjabi recipe and we make this with toor dal. Lets look at the steps for making this dal tadka.
Preparation Time : 10 mints | Cooking Time : 20 mints | Serves : 2-3
Ingredients :
Toor dal / Thuvaram Paruppu – 1 cup
Tomato – 1 chopped
Small Onions / Shallots – 5 chopped roughly
Turmeric powder – a pinch
Salt – to taste
To Temper :
Oil / Ghee – 1 tbspn
Mustard seeds – 1 tspn
Cumin Seeds – 1 tspn
Hing – a pinch
Dry red chili – 1
Curry leaves – few
Method :
1. Wash the dal and soak for 30 mints. Pressure cook dal along with shallots, tomato and a pinch of turmeric powder with enough water for 4 whistles.Once pressure releases mash up the dal until mushy. Add the required salt and mix well.
2. Heat the oil/ghee, add the items listed under ‘to temper’. Allow it to crackle, switch off and add this tadka to the dal. Mix well.
Dal Tadka is ready..!!
My Notes :
1. Instead of toor dal you can make this with moong dal.
2, Instead of shallots you can use big onions.
