KUMBAKONAM KADAPPA
Kumbakonam Kadappa is the most popular south indian side dish for tiffin items like idli,dosa,poori etc.. This is famous in the Thanjur and Kumbakonam area in southern part of India. This kadappa is made of potato , moong dal along with the flavors of onion and whole spices. The procedure of making kadappa is as follows.

Ingredients :
Potato - 3 medium sized
Moong dal - 1/4 cup
Coconut - 3 tbsp
Poppy Seeds - 1 tbsp
Fennel Seeds - 1 tspn
Oil - 3 tbsp
Bay leaf - 2
Cloves - 3
Cardamom - 1
Cinnamon - 1 inch stick
Mustard - 1 tspn
G.chili - 2
Curry leaves - few
Onion - 1/4 cup (slit lengthwise)
Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tbsp
Hing - 1/4 tspn
Salt - to taste
Turmeric - 1/ 4 tspn
Coriander leaves - few (finely chopped)
Water - as required
Procedure :
1. Soak the poppy seeds in warm water for ten mints. Then grind the coconut , fennel seeds and poppy seeds to a fine paste . Pressure cook the moong dal and potatoes for three whistle. Mash the moong dal well. Peel the skin and mash potatoes roughly. In a kadai heat oil and add whole spices.
2. Add the mustard seeds allow it to pop. Then add the green chili and curry leaves , onions. Once onion turns pink add the ginger garlic paste. Cook till raw smell goes.
3. Then add the mashed moong dal , potatoes with required water. Add turmeric , salt , Hing and give a quick mix.
4.Allow it to boil for 5 mints. Then add the grinded coconut paste and mix well. When its cooked completely add the chopped coriander leaves and serve.
Serve the kadappa with hot idlis.
