THENKUZHAL
Murukku is a savory, crunchy Indian snack. The snack originated in the Tamil Nadu state, and its name derives from the Tamil word for "twisted", which refers to its shape. Murukku is popular all over India .
Thenkuzhal Murukku is typically made from rice and urad dal flour. The flours are mixed with water, salt, asafoetida and either sesame seeds or cumin seeds. The mix is kneaded into a dough, which is shaped into spiral or coil shapes using a mold. The spirals are then deep fried in vegetable oil.
Usually Thenkuzhal is made for special occasions like Diwali,Krishna Jeyanthi etc.. Traditionally it is made by making flour at home but today i did easily with the store bought flour.
Ingredients :
Rice Flour - 2 cups
Urad Flour - 1/2 cup
Butter - 2 tbsp
Salt - as required
Hing - as required
Cumin seeds - 1 tspn
Steps :
1. In a mixing bowl add the rice flour and urad flour along with butter . Mix well evenly then add the salt , hing and cumin seeds. Add the water little by little and make it to a chapati dough. Divide the dough into equal portions that is to fit in the murukku mold.
2. Now grease the mold with oil in inner sides and fill the mold with dough. Then press the murukku on oil greased plate. Heat the oil in side.
3. Once the oil is hot put the murukku in oil and deep fry it until golden brown on both sides. Then remove the murukku from oil.
Now the thenkuzhal is ready to serve.
Notes :
1. You can also dry roast the flour before making the murukku dough for better results.
2. Instead of store bought flour you can also use home made flours.
